There are so many old school decks being re-issued right now, and I am glad. No offense but most of the art of new decks just does not compare to the timeless classic designs of the days when I was growing up. (sorry kids lol)

In 1987, Vallely turned pro and Powell Peralta released his first pro model skateboard. After an attempt to release Vallely’s pro model with graphics of a large bug, it was later changed to the now well-known “elephant” graphics. Vallely stated that the idea for the graphics came to him after watching a National Geographic television special about elephants. The graphics on Mike’s “Elephant” board were drawn by legendary skateboard artist V. Courtland Johnson.

In 1989, Vallely quit Powell Peralta. At the time Powell Peralta was the biggest skateboarding brand in the world which sponsored the best and most talented skaters. After quitting, Vallely helped form the small skater run company called World Industries with Steve Rocco, Jesse Martinez and Rodney Mullen. While riding for World Industries he helped create a newly shaped skateboard deck, which eventually became the industry standard. The model included rounding both the tail and nose, rather than rounded nose and straight edged tail.

I’ve been watching way too many horror movies lately, tired of action movies and sci-fi, I decided to look up some old skate vids I had not seen in a very long time. Which one could I find? I had looked for Animal Chin for years hoping it would come out on DVD, and it finally has.

It’s been a long time since my old Animal Chin VHS needed to be replaced, and I am glad to be able to replace it with something as cool as this 2-DVD special edition Animal Chin.

Since I started posting more entries about the old school skateboards that came out when I was young, some even before my time, I decided to post the original Caballero pig decks.. I posted the black and red bats & dragon Cab Street … “Pigs” are what us old timers call the fat decks like this…

(Right) The skateboard on the right is a redo of the original graphic, you can see they made his name more legible by moving the dragon up a little off the disc and revealing his name more in the graphic… awesome skateboards from the past.

After posting the cover of Disposable recently, I realized I should post the old pink/red Lance Mountain that seems to be one of the rarest and hard to find colors of old Lance Mountain decks.

It’s been reported that thic deck has hit the $900 range on eBay in the past and will likely only go up in price as the years go on.

Being a huge skateboard deck art fan, when I first stumbled across Disposable: A History of Skateboard Art – I thought to myself – “this is the book I thought would never come out.” Almost as if, I had been waiting for it forever.

Another skateboard deck with art I can picture from my youth is the old school John Grigley. When this deck came out I can remember I tried to draw the face on paper to make a stencil for my book covers! Those were the days…

This isn’t the oldest of the Lance Mountain decks out there, but I still like the design. Made by Powell Peralta
